Look at all of the buildings, homes, roads, and bustling city. Then understand that the entire city of Tucson started in the El Presidio neighborhood. The El Presidio neighborhood can be traced all the way back to the 1700’s.

If it were not for an Irishman who was in the service of Spain, the Seven Years War in Europe, and a corrupt governor in Texas, the city of Tucson may not exist today. Hugo O’Conner who was only 16 at the time, snuck out of his home country of Ireland which was ruled by Great Britain at the time. He fled to Spain to join his cousins who were serving as officers in the Spanish army. Throughout O’Conor’s extensive military career he quickly rose through the ranks. He ended up becoming one of the most trusted and reliable men in the King’s service. That is likely why he was asked to become the acting Governor of Texas when the previous Governor appointed by Spain was implicated in corruption. During this time period the Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and California were referred to as New Spain. Spain was concerned with Russia and Great Britain taking over the northern territories of New Spain. Therefore, the King of Spain put O’Coner in charge of strengthening the defenses of the northern border of the “New Spain” territory. O’Conor reached the area which we now know as Arizona in 1775. He then established the presidio (fort) just north of the Mission of San Xavier Del Bac. Tucson became the Northern most position of defense in New Spain. While you may be picturing the fort as a relatively small building, that’s not the case. The fort (presidio) ended up spanning 10-11 acres. The walls of the fort were 12 feet tall and 3 feet thick when it was finally completed. O’Conor did not stay in Tucson for very long. However, he is credited for the start El Presidio and the city which would later become Tucson.

Their guide was so impressed with how well Mrs. Lemmon managed the steep ascent and terrain that he recommended naming the mountain after her. Prior to their visit the Mount Lemmon summit was only frequented by natives. Additionally fugitives would use the mountain’s elevation and terrain to evade the long arm of the law.
