How did Mount Lemmon get its name?
The name of the area always prompts the question, “How did Mount Lemmon get its name?” It is an understandable question. Mount Lemmon is an interesting name for a city and the spelling adds an extra layer of mystery. Mount Lemmon is named after a well renowned botanist Sara Plummer Lemmon. She and her husband visited what we now refer to as Mount Lemmon on their honeymoon. Their guide was so impressed with how well Mrs. Lemmon managed the steep ascent and terrain that he recommended naming the mountain after her. Prior to their visit the Mount Lemmon summit was only frequented by natives. Additionally fugitives would use the mountain’s elevation and terrain to evade the long arm of the law. The botanist couple and their guide camped on top of the mountain documenting all the native plant species. To this day Mount Lemmon is one of the only mountain peaks named after a woman in the United States.
